In February, 2003, the Restriction of Hazardous Substances(RoHS) Directive was issued by the European Economic Union (EEU). After July 1, 2006, this directive will ban new electronic equipment from being sold in Europe if it contains more than trace levels of lead (Pb), hexavalent chromium (Cr6), cadmium, mercury (Hg) or PBBs (Polybrominated biphenyls) and PBDEs (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers) which are brominated flame retardants. RoHS compliance initiatives have spread beyond Europe to the rest of the world.
The objective of RoHS is to safeguard the environment and the health of humans in terms of pollution by limiting the use of these hazardous substances. Nearly all electrical and electronic equipment that is thrown away or becomes redundant ultimately ends up in our landfills; it’s estimated that, in Europe alone, this discarded equipment makes up for six million tons of garbage. The goal of the RoHS Directive is to restrict the use of these unsafe materials and to diminish the waste management dilemmas linked to these materials which are expected to pose risks to our health and to the health of our environment.
In conjunction with our overseas factories, WP has been successful in removing non-compliant substances from the components in our products.
This is just another way that WP continually endeavors to enhance our manufacturing procedures and increase our ecological responsiveness.
